Sweden has seen the future and it’s cashless

Ten years from now, a pasty-faced young man in a decrepit St Petersburg office block hits the enter key on his laptop and disables the entire Swedish economy. Card machines spew out streams of meaningless symbols. Nannies, taxi drivers and civil servants go unpaid. The smartphone apps everyone relies on to take the bus to work, buy their morning cappuccino and pay their rent are reduced to so much useless software.

Worst of all, there is no cash for the nation to fall back on. The banks took back most of the notes a couple of years ago. There is the odd wodge of krona stuffed away in someone’s attic, but they are little more than a historical curiosity now.
